UHCL art coordinator completes Empty Bowls Houston challenge for seventh year

The University of Houston-Clear Lake Exhibitions Coordinator Karen Fiscus has completed another year of making 100 bowls to benefit and donate to Empty Bowls Houston.

Fiscus’ making of the bowls began as a challenge she accepted by local wood artist Clark Kellogg. Kellogg challenged himself to make 100 bowls in 2012 for Empty Bowls Houston, a Houston based artist-run organization dedicated to feeding the hungry.

Fiscus, along with other artists, accepted the challenge and she has been making the bowls for seven years now, including this year. With that, Fiscus has made and donated 700 bowls to Empty Bowls Houston and as a result has raised $17,500 to help the organization, as well as the Houston Food Bank.

Empty Bowls Houston noted that for every $1 donated to the Houston Food Bank, they can provide three meals, meaning that Fiscus’ contribution has provided 52,500 meals to those in need in Houston.
