BRIEF: Campus Rec asks for donations

UHCL Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is working alongside the Houston Food Bank in order to give back to the Houston area community.

The “Fighting Hunger Together” campaign is a food drive and collaboration between the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness and the Houston Food Bank in an effort to raise hunger awareness and provide supplies to individuals and families in need,” said Bryce Starr, Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness.

On Nov. 21, the Houston Food Bank had to throw out a large portion of their refrigerated products to a leak that caused a contamination issue.

“Donations are needed now more than ever and the UH-Clear Lake community has a chance to come together and provide for our fellow Houstonians,” Starr said.

Those who are interested in making a donation can use the drop-off locations at UHCL, UHCL Pearland and the Texas Medical Center.

“I ask that members of the UH-Clear Lake community consider providing a donation or seeking alternatives such as volunteering at the Houston Food Bank,” Starr said.

Non-perishable items can be donated at any drop-off location until Dec. 13, however, anyone interested in donating fresh food cannot use these locations.

“Items in need consist of non-perishable foods including canned meat, peanut butter, canned fruit and veggies (low in sugar and no salt added), cereal, soups, pasta, dry beans and rice,” Starr said. “Fresh vegetable[s] and other items may be available for direct donation at the Houston Food Bank location.”

The food drive is just one of the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness’ aim to give back to the community. They are also hosting a Toys for Tots campaign until Nov. 30 and a School Supplies Drive until Dec. 13.

“This collaboration to fight hunger will help service individuals in the greater Houston area. This is just one of the many donation[s] and drop off campaigns that the fitness and wellness program are currently promoting.”

CORRECTION (12/05/19): The drop off locations end date has been extended until Dec. 13. The article has been updated to reflect this change.
