FAQ: COVID-19 causes changes to spring 2020 semester

The University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) has canceled classes for the week of March 16-20, 2020. Starting March 23, 2020, courses will transition to being conducted online or through an alternative format. Below are frequently asked questions, with more to be added as answers are received.

General

Yes, there are currently five self-reported and one confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the UHCL community. For more information visit uhcl.edu/health-alert.

As of now, classes are only canceled for the week of March 16-20, 2020. Beyond that, classes will move to an online or alternative format starting March 23, 2020.

Be sure to contact your professors and check Blackboard to see how your courses will be altered.

Classes will continue in these formats through the remainder of the spring 2020 semester.

Starting March 25, all campus operations will move online, with access to the campus being limited to essential personnel. This will last at least through April 30.

The campus will remain limited to only essential personnel from March 25 – April 30.

Beginning May 4, the SSCB 2201 and Pearland 104 computer labs will be open under a revised schedule. There are also guidelines students must follow in order to enter and remain in the lab. Courses

As part of precautions regarding the spread of COVID-19, UHCL has made the decision to transition all courses to an online or alternative format.

The class schedule for the semester has been altered to the following:

– Classes canceled (March 16-21)
– All classes go online/alternative format (March 23)
– Last class day – 1st 8-week (March 28)
– First class day – 2nd 8-week (March 30)

Faculty are working with their department chairs, administrators, library liaisons, and others to ensure their courses can be transitioned to an online or alternative format. This includes lectures, exams, and special courses (lab and studio use).

Each class will be impacted differently depending on course structure and instructor. It is encouraged students reach out to their professors and check Blackboard.

Starting March 23 through May 2, there will be no face-to-face exams. However, professors will decide how to best provide students with exams remotely. As of March 23, students will not be charged for online proctored exams during this period.

UHCL has announced an interim grading option for the spring 2020 semester. Students will be allowed to select between a traditional letter grading scheme or a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading scheme. Visit uhcl.edu/health-alert for more details.

Commencement

Commencement ceremonies have been postponed until summer or early fall semester.

On-Campus Living

Hunter Hall will remain open for those students choosing to stay, along with Student Housing and Residential Life. Additionally, Dining Services will be available.

Parking and Transportation

Shuttle services will be suspended until further notice.

Excluding employee parking lots, all parking enforcement will be suspended until further notice.

Students who paid for a parking permit will receive a “pro-rated credit.”

Services

Dining Services will remain open with updated hours of operation.

Patio Cafe:
Mon–Sun (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; 5 – 7 p.m.)
Only the grill and deli will be open.

Starting March 25 – April 30, the UHCL campus will be limited to essential personnel. The Neumann Library has the following virtual hours:

Mon – Thur : 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Fri: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sat: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sun: 1– 5 p.m.

All in-person consultations are suspended until further notice. The Writing Center will continue to offer virtual appointments from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Further, the Writing Center will be virtually open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Fridays.

To contact via Microsoft Teams, visit Office.com and log on using your UHCL email and password. Then locate the Teams app and message user “uhclwc.”

The Math Center office is closed, but tutors are available online via Discord. To access the Math Center Discord chat, visit discordapp.com/invite/KZDM7He.

Additionally, the Math Center is offering one-on-one online appointments. To set up an appointment email Noe Hernandez (hernandezn@uhcl.edu) or Cheryl Evans (evans@uhcl.edu) or call 281-283-2460 with your time availability and subject.It is recommended to call the Math Center at 281-283-2460 prior to visiting.

Counseling Services will be offering all services remotely from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on scheduling one-on-one sessions, visit uhc.edu/counseling-services or call 281-283-2580.

Starting March 25 – April 3, the campus will be limited to essential personnel only. The campus online bookstore will remain open and extend free shipping. For more information, contact the UHCL campus bookstore at 281-283-2189.

Student Workers

Campus will be limited only to essential personnel March 25 – April 30. Student workers are to talk with their supervisor to determine if working remotely is possible.

Student Organizations

The Office Student Involvement and Leadership (OSIL) advises student orgs to suspend face-to-face meetings on campus. However, OSIL encourages student orgs to reach out for assistance in replacing in-person meetings with alternatives.

Virtual room space is available for student orgs to host meetings online. To request a virtual space, fill out the online form found on GetInvolved.

All campus events are canceled through May 31. This includes all student org events.

Travel

As per the Office of the Governor, all state agencies are to cancel non-essential domestic travel until April 30.

If a student has or plans to travel internationally to countries classified as Level 2 or Level 3 by the CDC, they must self-report their travel to UHCL. To do so, fill out this form.

Most study abroad programs will continue through Spring 2020. However, all UHCL sponsored study abroad programs to China, Italy and South Korea are suspended until further notice.

Bayou Theater

All Bayou Theater events have been canceled through April 30, 2020.

Ticket holders for events canceled will be contacted to arrange gift certificates or refunds.

Summer 2020

Yes. At this time, registration for the summer 2020 semester is continuing as planned.
