RECAP: SGA unveils soft opening of lounge

The Sept. 15 SGA meeting began at 11:33 a.m.

SGA President Hiba Loya said the current fund request balance is $22,500 and to request funds, student organizations have to email SGA a form that can be found on the SGA page on their website. Students can email SGA for instructions.

Loya reminded students of the resolution writing training on September 17.

Loya also mentioned the Friday, Sep. 12 town hall and let students know the recording can be found on SGA’s YouTube channel. She announced that the next town hall will be on Oct. 16 from 10 a/m. to 12 p.m. If students are interested or want more information, they can reach out to their college senator or email SGA.

She also reminded students that applications still open for Vice President of Outreach and Communications and Vice President of Administration. If students want to know responsibilities, they can check out the constitution on Get involved.

Misty Woods, VP of Committee Coordinator, spoke about committee recruitment and mentioned that they need education majors for the Academic Honesty Panel. Woods said SGA need at least nine students for the Student Conduct Panel. They also need students who are available to commit for one year for SFAC.

They also need for the Constitution Ad Hoc committee to help update the constitution. So far, they meet on Fridays for about one and a half hours, if they are not available during that time, she mentioned that students can email her and she’ll work with them.

Loya said students leaders should forward these messages to other students and let them know there are opportunities available to make their voice heard on campus

They are also looking for one student from each college for the Piper Award Committee to help choose which professor receives the Piper Award. Students can apply through Get Involved in the Student Rep Committee application or send an email to SGA.

Andrea Alvarado, the advisor and program director for Pathways to STEM careers announced that they’re hosting the Baylor College of Medicine Graduate School and it is more for students interested in pursuing a PhD. The event is on Friday Sep. 18 at 12 p.m. She also mentioned that next week they will have a google software engineer come speak and let students know that they are going to be providing events for those interested in the STEM field such as the chemistry of cooking.

Brian Mills, director of Campus Recreation and Wellness, spoke about the Campus Recreation Activities Board (CRAB) which is going into its 3rd year. He mentioned that they are soliciting students interested to have a voice in Campus Recreation and Wellness. Applications are open until Wednesday Sep. 16. This team will virtually meet once a month where they will have input on things such as special events, programming and marketing. He mentioned that if anyone has questions, to email him directly. 

Alina Thomas, Office of Student Involvement and Leadership peer advisor, announced some of the programs that OSIL is doing. She mentioned they are going through registration season and there are six workshops left. Sep. 25 by 5 p.m. is the last day to register. If unable, she mentioned students can email them and they will work with them.

She also mentioned voter registration every Monday at OSIL. Students can make an appointment through Get Involved.

OSIL will celebrate the adoption of the constitution on Zoom for Constitution Day. Interested students can register through Get Involved.

Lastly, she mentioned OSIL is doing Virtual L.E.D.S. Leadership Through Community Involvement workshops. Students can register on Get Involved.

Open forum began with Aaron Hart thanking students for participating in Weeks of Welcome, and mentioned there were over 1700 participants. He also mentioned the shirts given out for Weeks of Welcome were popular so they are going to order more shirts in different colors. 

Patrick Cardenas, director of student involvement and leadership, announced the soft opening of the new Student Org Center and Lounge. The Student Org Center and Lounge is open for soft opening and students can come in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, following guidelines. He also wants students to encourage each other to connect virtually and remain connected through the virtual programming the offices are hosting. Lastly, he mentioned the shirts will be handed out at the lounge.

Hart also included that the next iteration of shirts will only be for students, unlike last time which was also for faculty and staff.
