COMMUNITY UPDATE: UHCL S/U Grading Policy Reinstated for Spring 2021

Dear Hawks:

While continuing to effectively navigate the pandemic, the Houston area was impacted by winter storm Uri, which created challenges for our faculty, staff and students. After discussing this with the Student Government Association and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, I have decided to reinstate the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading policy (S/U policy) for Spring semester 2021 only. This decision, as all others, was made as a compassionate and caring response to extraordinary circumstances.

Students who are having academic challenges this semester can choose the S/U policy and/or the Pandemic Related Academic Withdraw/Drop policy. Below are student grading options for spring 2021.

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading Policy

This allows a student to choose either a traditional grading system (A, B, C, D, F grade) or a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading scheme (S or U grade). This will be in place for spring 2021 only.

Pandemic Related Academic Withdraw/Drop Policy (PRAW/D)

The PRAW/D policy allows a student to choose either a traditional grading system (A, B, C, D, F grade) or request to withdraw (WX) from one, or all, of their courses. This applies to both undergraduate and graduate students. This withdraw/drop policy will be in place for spring 2021 and summer 2021.

Before making a decision, I strongly encourage students to discuss their options with their faculty and/or academic adviser, the Office of Financial Aid or the Office of Veteran Services. This will ensure students understand the implications of the change on their future academic and professional plans, including progress toward degree completion, graduate school or financial aid awards.

Information regarding the temporary S/U grading policy and the PRAW/D policy will be communicated to students online, and via email, advisers and faculty.

I wish to thank the Student Government Association and Faculty Senate Executive Committee for their advocacy on behalf of UHCL students. It is clear that our university’s commitment to the success of its students is second to none. We continue to show that together we can face any challenge.

Sincerely,
Steven J. Berberich, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
