Friday Continuing Education Series kicks off in July

The Friday Morning Continuing Education Series resumes in July. The program will host three online classes through Zoom.

  • “Fake News, Deep Fakes, and Pesky Algorithms” discusses misinformation in news feeds and social media and how to combat them. Lindsay Humphrey, manager of student publications, is the event speaker.
  • “Starting Anew: The Lone Star Flight Museum,” which will discuss the newly renovated Lone Star Flight Museum. Gen. Doug Owens is the event speaker.
  • “Money and Politics: Corrosive, Corrupt or Constitutional?” will explore the relationship between money and politics in the US. Bill Powers will be the speaker for the event.

Each segment begins at 9:30 a.m. on July 9, July 16, and July 23.

Christine Paul, director of foreign language program and continuing education programs, said the topics were chosen based on requests from past participants and as a way to address prominent topics of today.

“I think that each topic is unique because it is unlike the other two,” Paul said. “These three have also not been presented before.  The first appeals to the rapidly changing and increasing usage of media online.  This creates great problems for all of us to make sure that what we are hearing is accurate and not politically biased or false.  About the Lone Star Flight Museum,  I have been there before, and it is fascinating.  Most people have not seen these aircraft up close.  And lastly, Bill’s talks really make us all think about current events and how to evaluate them.  The entire series in July is created with the desire to inform people, expand their awareness, and enrich their lives.”
