COMMUNITY UPDATE: UHCL COVID-19 Precautions

Dear Hawks,

With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Houston, I remind everyone that we must remain vigilant. We are still on course for a full return to campus by August 2, with fall classes beginning August 23. However, this is a rapidly changing situation, and while we continue to monitor, we ask that you keep these prevention strategies in mind:

  • Vaccination is the leading prevention strategy to protect individuals from COVID-19 disease. Please consider getting vaccinated if you have not already done so.
  • UHCL continues to encourage those who are not fully vaccinated to wear a mask to protect themselves from being infected by others and prevent infecting others should they have an asymptomatic infection.
  • Although fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear a mask according to CDC guidelines, you may choose to do so as an extra level of protection.

As a reminder, COVID-19 testing is still available on campus from Curative at the walk-up kiosk located in the Delta parking lot, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We will also hold our next vaccination clinic on Thursday, July 29, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am in Bayou B1636. Both testing and vaccinations are available at no cost and open to faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Thank you for your continued resilience. I look forward to seeing you in person as we transition back to working and studying on campus.

Sincerely,
Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
President

  1. Dr. Clark says

UHCL Admin IS ADVISING students and staff to wear masks.

Yes, the choice is yours, but please stay on top of the facts. Like, per the CDC, the Delta Variant carries a viral load 1,000 times more than the previous Alpha strain 20-21–this is what makes Delta so infections and fast-moving.

-Those vaccinated can be infected and pass the virus on to their fellow students and families, (and faculty and staff).
-The un-vaccinated can easily catch this virus with detrimental effects if they are mask-less.
-The immunocompromised vaccinated should wear mask or seek an ADA Accommodation if their medical team advises you to do so. (This requires a letter from your physician.)

    Be smart, safe and educated.
