Dr. Yates brings more than 12 years of experience in higher education to UHCL. Since January 2021, he has served as Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkley. In his new role, Dr. Yates will be responsible for implementing, developing and overseeing the University’s overall strategic plan as it relates to diversity and inclusion. In addition, he will work with campus partners to create, establish and implement assessment strategies to actively and consistently assess, evaluate and leverage the progress toward a climate of inclusion and diversity for students, faculty, and staff. Reporting to the Office of the President and serving as members of UHCL Core Leadership, these two new positions will provide senior-level leadership for the university. They will work collaboratively across their two areas and on education and training across diversity, equity, and inclusion topics.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Title IX and Equal Opportunity Officer and the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer search committees who worked diligently through these searches. In addition, I want to extend my gratitude to the faculty, staff and students who participated in the on-campus forums and provided feedback to both committees.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Brittain and Dr. Yates on their respective selections and wishing them well as they work to advance University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Sincerely,

Richard Walker, Ed.D.
