Upcoming Safe Zone Ally Events

Transgender 102: How to Be an Ally to Transgender Students – Part 2, April 25: noon-1:00 p.m., Bayou 2512

In this presentation, Colt Meier, a UHCL practicum counselor will be explaining specific ally behaviors. He will facilitate interactive discussions as well as role plays where allies will have the opportunity to try out the skills that they have learned and ask questions that might come up. Attendees will learn more ways they can interact with others in order to be supportive and sensitive to the needs of transgender students. You are welcome to bring your lunch.

Safe Zone Ally Roundtable, May 2: noon-1:00 p.m., Bayou 1437

Have you ever encountered anti-LGBT sentiments from students in your classes? Have you had trouble navigating these sensitive conversations in a classroom setting? You are NOT ALONE! Faculty Allies are often confronted with students whose person views and methods of expression are potentially offensive or disruptive to the learning environment and addressing those issues can be complicated. This roundtable will offer you the opportunity to share your experiences, give and seek advice, and receive support from our network of Allies. This event will be a casual, supportive conversation. Please feel free to bring your lunch.

Safe Zone Ally Reception, TBA

This year has been a great one for the Safe Zone Ally Program. We have expanded to formally include Peer Allies, have hosted Transgender 101 & 102 workshops, and are continuing to grow our network of Allies throughout campus. We will be gathering during Pride Month to celebrate our successes and give thanks to all of the dedicated and enthusiastic UHCL Safe Zone Allies. Please keep an eye out for future announcements about this event.
