SGA meeting – March 28,2017

The meeting took place in the Garden Room in the Bayou Building for the president’s luncheon. Student organizations, professors and faculty members were treated to lunch which included baked potatoes. President Staples spoke before the usual announcements took place, thanking everyone there for their hard work.

Fund requests were then presented.

  • Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) requested funds to attend the TXBA annual conference April 11. The event will take place at Landry’s in Kemah from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society is planning to hold a country and western dance April 14 in Atrium II. The fund request was approved and the event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Executive Council then gave their announcements.

  • A raffle took place between four student organizations who collected more than 500 food items for the food drive. American Dental Society (ADS) won a table at the Student Leadership Banquet and the Model Arab League Student Organization (MALSO) won a basket the SGA made.
  • ADS also won student organization of the month and Matt Baize won student leader of the month.
  • SGA then talked about Executive Council applications and went into detail about how hard the job can be, but also how it can be rewarding at times.

Student organizations then gave their announcements.

  • The music club will have their second concert April 8 at 7 p.m. in the Bayou Theater. The concert is free for all students with a student ID and 5 dollars for non-UHCL students.
  • Pre-Health and Science Associations (PHSA) will have a nacho bar April 30 in Atrium I from 12-3 p.m.
  • Communication and Digital Media Association (CDMA) will have an art show April 19 in the student organizations room. Students can submit up to three pieces of art, and there is a 5 dollar submission fee for each submission. If a piece of art sales, CDMA will keep 10 percent of the sale.
  • Campus Activities Board (CAB) will have ultimate frisbee March 30 at the SSCB field from 3-5 p.m.
    • CAB will be playing “Guardians of the Galaxy” at the outdoor movie night March 31 from 7-10:30 p.m.
    • They will also take a field trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science April 20 from 1:30-6 p.m.

The meeting ended with general announcements.

  • The student conference will take place April 17-20, and students are encouraged to sign up to volunteer and be audience members.
  • The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will hold the LGBT health expo March 28 in Atrium II from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The majors and minors fair will take place March 30 in the Bayou Building from 1-3 p.m.
  • The president’s roundtable will take place April 14 in the Student Org. Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • SLICE will have their social justice dinner March 30 from 5-7 p.m. in the student orgs. room. The theme for this event will be The Renaissance of Student Activism.
    • The next leadership workshop takes place March 31 in SSCB 3306 from 1-3 p.m.
    • The following workshop will take place April 6 in SSCB 3306 from 5-7 p.m.
