RECAP: SGA meeting reveals Recreation and Wellness Center’s opening

SGA President Hiba Loya began the SGA meeting on Tuesday, September 1 at 11:30 a.m.

The fund request balance was $12,939.7.

Loya announced her office hours. She will be available by Microsoft Teams on Tuesday’s from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

She then mentioned the special elections for the Vice President of Communications and Outreach position and encouraged students to apply. The applications are available on GetInvolved.

She also reminded everyone to fill out the 2020 Census and explained the benefits that come with filling it out such as funding.

She also mentioned the Town Halls and dates, the dates are Friday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., October 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and November 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In the Town Halls, the administration will answer questions that they have created as well as a live Q&A session. 

Misty Woods, Vice President Committee Coordinator, spoke about the constitution. She also encouraged students to email her to woods@uhcl.edu or sga@uhcl.edu if they are interested in helping update the constitution. 

Jasara Scates said the director reports. Scates is the Internal Affairs Director for this year. 

Loya mentioned that there were director and senate positions available and let students know to apply through GetInvolved.

Brian Mills, director of Campus Recreation and Wellness, mentioned that they were open for business and were on phase two of their reopening plan and that students can find the information on their website. 

Mills also relayed information for students who are planning on going to the Campus Recreation and Wellness and the safety measures they are taking. He also spoke about the hours and capacity levels and that the center will be having a special event in the backyard movie screen where they will be showing “Onward.” 

Lastly, he mentioned the virtual programming such as the fitness classes which will be provided for free for all members and that the classes are virtual as well as students will have access to Down Dog, an app that offers a variety of exercises, for free for the next six months and Wellness Wednesday where they will be putting out wellness Zoom presentations.

After those announcements there was an open forum in which Aaron Hart, vice president for student affairs, showed shirts that are going to be given out for Weeks of Welcome. He also encouraged students to come to campus next week for Weeks of Welcome where they will be given different UHCL merchandise.

After, Derek Delgado, legal studies major, mentioned that he has been waiting on a response from administration and SGA. Hart responded by saying that, due to the hurricane, that day was considered an emergency leave day and that staff were not available by email but he planned on reaching out that day.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:03 p.m.
