BRIEF: The Signal wins 21 awards for 2019-2020 academic year

Competing in digital media categories, The Signal won 21 awards for work published during the 2019-2020 school year. Twelve awards come from the state-level Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) competition, while nine are national awards: two from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and seven from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA).

“I’m honestly just so incredibly proud of what our reporters and editors have accomplished especially since March 2020,” said Emily Nichelle Wolfe, editor-in-chief since May 2020. “While we’ve had to deal with the expected loss of the Media Production class, none of us could have ever imagined having to transition during the COVID-19 pandemic, insane weather events, cultural movements, the murder of George Floyd, the after effects of the 2020 election and actual insurrection. Everyone on staff has been incredible and so hardworking and their work reflects that.”

Composed of graduate and undergraduate students from across the university, The Signal staff is student-run, with Manager of Student Publications Lindsay Humphrey serving as the adviser.

“I am thrilled to see the students’ hard work receive such recognition,” Humphrey said. “Each year I am amazed by the staff’s accomplishments. Our students are competing against top-tier universities, many with journalism schools and staffs with more than a hundred students. The fact that our students can hold their own in these competitions speaks to the outstanding work produced by The Signal staff. I am extremely proud of the students.”
