Black Stress to give Black students a space to talk about their experiences

As part of its Black History Month programming, Counseling Services and the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (OSDEI) are collaborating to host the Black Stress Roundtable Discussion.

The focus of this program is to provide a safe, supportive space for Black-identifying students, staff and faculty to discuss Black stress and provide them with valuable resources.

“The mission of Black Stress, in terms of programming, is to discuss what Black stress is,” said Shavonne Fuller, staff psychologist at Counseling Services.” So to be able to contextualize it and also talk about how Black stress is experienced, depending on your intersecting identities.”

Fuller added she will moderate the discussion with Aliya Beavers, director of OSDEI. Additionally, they will serve as panelists alongside students, staff and a guest speaker.

“I am very excited for tomorrow’s event because it will bring Black students, faculty, and staff members from the UHCL community together,” Beavers said. “Whether you choose to attend the program to share your story or simply participate by listening to others, this supportive space will address the needs of many.”

The Black Stress event is Feb. 10 from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Those interested can check out the Get Involved page.
